Summer storms around Airdrie can bring hail that leaves its mark on homes. Some damage is obvious, but a lot of it is small enough to miss until water starts getting in or the paint begins to fail.
What to check after a hail storm
Walk around your home once it is safe and look closely at:
- Stucco: chips, small craters and new hairline cracks, especially on the side that faced the storm
- Vinyl siding: dents, cracks, holes and scuffed or dull patches
- Trim, fascia and garage doors: dents and chipped paint
- Fences and decks: splintered or bruised wood where the stain has been knocked off
Take photos with the date. If you plan to make an insurance claim, photos taken soon after the storm help.
Why small damage matters
Cracks and chips in stucco let moisture in. In Airdrie, that water freezes and thaws through the winter and chinook cycles, which makes the cracks grow. Bare wood that has lost its stain dries out and greys quickly in the sun and wind.
