Why preparation matters most
The biggest reason a deck stain fails early is poor prep. Before we stain, we clean the wood to remove dirt, mildew and old loose stain, let it dry fully, replace or secure damaged boards, and sand rough areas. Stain only lasts if it can soak into clean, dry wood.
Choosing the right stain
Penetrating stains soak into the wood and wear away gradually, which makes them easier to maintain. Solid stains hide more of the wood grain and old colour but can peel if they are put on too thick. When to book
Staining needs dry weather and mild temperatures. Many lakefront owners book in spring so the deck is ready for summer. Early fall also works well, before the cold arrives.
