Why lakefront walls take more sun
Alberta already gets a lot of sunshine. On the lake, walls and decks facing the water can also get light reflected off the surface, especially when the sun is low in the morning and evening. South- and west-facing walls get the most, and dark colours absorb more heat, which speeds up the damage.
What sun damage looks like
- Fading: colours look lighter or uneven, often in patches
- Chalking: a powdery residue on the surface when you touch it
- Cracking and peeling on trim, especially around windows and doors
- Stain on decks and fences turning grey and patchy
Chalking is the most important sign. It means the paint’s binder is breaking down, and new paint won’t stick properly over it unless the surface is cleaned and prepared first.
Choosing a finish that lasts
- Use a high-quality 100% acrylic exterior paint with good UV resistance
- Consider slightly lighter colours on the sunniest walls, which hold up better and stay cooler
- Choose a sheen that suits the surface: satin often wears better on siding and trim than flat
- For wood, use stains with enough pigment to block UV
Preparation is what makes it last
